How is FD interest calculated?

FD interest is calculated using compound interest for cumulative FDs (quarterly compounding) and simple interest for non-cumulative FDs. The formula for cumulative FDs is: Maturity = Principal × (1 + r/4)^(4×t), where r is the annual rate and t is tenure in years.

What is TDS on Fixed Deposits?

Banks deduct TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) at 10% on FD interest exceeding Rs 40,000 per year (Rs 50,000 for senior citizens). If PAN is not provided, TDS is deducted at 20%. You can submit Form 15G/15H to avoid TDS if your total income is below the taxable limit.

What is the difference between cumulative and non-cumulative FDs?

In a cumulative FD, interest is compounded quarterly and paid at maturity along with the principal — giving higher effective returns. In a non-cumulative FD, interest is paid out periodically (monthly, quarterly, or annually) — providing regular income but slightly lower total returns.

Do senior citizens get higher FD rates?

Yes, most banks and NBFCs offer 0.25% to 0.75% additional interest for senior citizens (age 60+). For example, Unity Small Finance Bank offers up to 9.50% for senior citizens compared to 9.00% for general depositors.
